Software Development Engineer, Reuters (Python AWS)
We envisage the successful candidate being based in Gdansk, Poland.
Reuters is seeking a talented Software Development Engineer to join a small, global team of high performers. You'll primarily work on AWS-hosted services supporting our web-based applications. As a Software Development Engineer, you'll be key to our products' architecture and will document, maintain and build modular, scalable, secure, performant, well tested services whilst mentoring your peers to do the same. 
Reuters News Agency's engineering team develops business-critical applications and services for the Reuters news organization. We provide publishers and broadcasters with news text, graphics, photos, audio, and video over both internet and satellite, while also providing web-scale hosted content solution to digital publishers. 
We are a supportive, close-knit team following Agile Scrum methodologies. We use modern common and boutique technologies like Python, AWS, Serverless, Docker, Jenkins, Git, JavaScript, TypeScript, Clojure(Script), Re-frame, and Reagent/React. The ideal candidate is an exceptional Python developer with deep experience building and maintaining web services in AWS. You have well-formed opinions and know how to strike a balance between pragmatism and perfection. 
 
 
About the Role 
As Software Development Engineer, Reuters, you will:
  • Work as part of a team (and in an organization) that prioritizes and respects you as a human being with a life outside of work. 
  • Be granted a large degree of autonomy (and responsibility) to make and guide both technical, architectural, and process decisions.
  • Design, build, maintain, secure, test and document scalable web services and microservices. 
  • Maintain and enhance existing CI/CD (Jenkins/Github Actions) pipelines. 
  • Mentor peers, providing code reviews, feedback, and technical guidance 
  • Implement intuitive well documented APIs 
  • Define strategy for, and contribute to, refactoring to meet architectural vision 
  • Estimate work scope to help forecast delivery timelines 
 
About You 
You're a fit for the role of Software Development Engineer, Reuters if you:
  • Have demonstrable experience in professional backend end web development and a passion for writing clean, maintainable, well tested code and Python 3 scripting.
  • Are comfortable working autonomously with the ability to self-direct.
  • Have experience of working with AWS Infrastructure / Components / Services knowledge - S3, IAM, CloudFormation, ECR, Fargate, Lambda, CloudWatch, CloudFront, DynamoDB and SNS.
  • Can manage Jenkins / Github Actions - CI/CD pipelines maintenance effectively.
  • Are able to communicate technical decisions and tradeoffsand have experience with version control (eg. Git/SVN/CVS).
  • Have experience performing code reviews, and providing technical mentorship, with the ability to adapt to changing product needs to help seize business opportunities.
  • Are a great communicator that's comfortable communicating in Business-level English.

  • AWS infrastructure / Components / Services knowledge - ECS, EKS, StepFunctions, SQS, Kinesis 
  • Apache or other HTTP servers 
  • Tomcat or other J2EE containers 
  • Linux/Shell script
